A FOOL’S IDEA – EXTRAS: THE DAY THEY HUNG THE ELEPHANT (FULL PERFORMANCE)
A circus clown recounts the mysterious and seedy tale of Mary the Elephant, a circus elephant who killed a man. Based on a true story, it happened one fateful afternoon in September of 1916 while Mary the Elephant was on her parade route near the railroad building town of Erwin, Tennessee. After heated debate as to the best way to kill an elephant, the town made Mary pay for her crime by hanging her from a train derrick. Our story is told from the perspective of the circus clown who was Mary’s trainer, friend, and companion. The clown lives out the purgatory that has become retelling Mary’s story over and over. This time, perhaps he tells too much…
