A few months ago I had the privilege to interview one of my former professors at Parsons New School of Design. I was enrolled in a class he teaches at Parsons called, “Visual Narrative”. I really had no idea what to expect. On the first day of class, this normal looking unassuming guy entered the classroom. He began to talk about the idea of storytelling and narrative. The way he spoke about story was as if he was telling us about how much he loved one of his children. The whole class could immediately tell that he had an intense passion for not only the subject matter but also for inspiring and infecting students with this passion as well.

He began to discuss narrative concepts such as comedy and drama, and asked for a volunteer to come to the front of the classroom. As the unsuspecting student approached the front of the class, the professor asked the young man to slap him. Apprehensively the student responded with “I don’t think I am comfortable with…”, then SLAP! The professor slapped the student across the face! The collective gasp of the classroom quickly turned into a slightly riotous laughter as the professor and the student began a playful game of slap-boxing. After about a minute, the professor ended the match, returning to the academic poise he had before the slap-dance began. He then turned to face the class and ask, “Now class, why was that funny?”.

It was in that moment that I knew this guy was an amazing teacher. He was able to take an abstract concept and make it real, and everyone in that class will remember that moment for the rest of their lives. I know I will, because now I know that an unexpected “gap” widening event is a great way to make people laugh. If it doesn’t work, slapping helps.

At any rate, this guy is not only an amazing teacher, but it turns out he is an award-winning brilliant artist/animator as well.

Please take a moment to meet him in this little profile video we made. I think you will enjoy the ride.

“Stand clear of the closing doors please!”

In my last post I updated you good folks about this really fun video segment I co-produced for ABC featuring my pal Barry Mitchell interviewing and doing some silly sketch comedy with Kevin Smith. Now you get to see the extended interview where Mr. Smith talks about an alternate universe in which he would have never been a filmmaker but rather an Internet guy, about how he doesn’t think he would ever be able to break into the film industry with all the competition today, about the love between two dudes that don’t fuck and making great art with honesty. Be sure to spot my beautiful face when Kevin points out my camera and I make my sexy cameo!

Ever since I saw that crazy black & white movie about a couple of guys working in a convenience store slinging soft drinks, beer, and inappropriate movies to children, I became an instant Kevin Smith fan. I even remember my “Chasing Amy” experience. I was making my first journey to the big city with my brother and a couple of friends, we were on the way to a rock concert (because what else motivates a bunch of goofballs from the south to drive for 14 hours over the course of one weekend). It was either on the way there or back, I cannot remember the exact timing, we driving through Jersey when someone remembered that “the new Kevin Smith film was just released” and where better to watch the new film by Kevin Smith but a theater in Jersey.

Me and Kevin kicking it "Tought Shit" style!

Fast forward to just a few weeks ago. My friend, frequent collaborator (we have previously created pieces with both Weird Al & comedian Chris Hardwick) & ABC news reporter Barry Mitchell told me that Kevin Smith had a new book out. He asked if I would be interested in helping him produce a piece for Kevin Smith to promote his new book. I thought it over for about five seconds and said “Hell yes, I would love to do a piece with the man that created Jay and Silent Bob“! Jokingly I remarked, “I will only do it if you put on a wig and interview him, at least part of the interview, as “Jay”. The moment he decided to say “okay”, I knew we were going to have a fun piece on our hands.

Here is the result of this madness, as it aired on ABC World News Now!

This one is called “Polly Love Me (I Know)” and he was inspired to write it because of a crush he had when he was a little boy, and he was never quite able to get his thing next to her thing. (Correct me if I got this wrong BF)
